Eduardo Machuca's Biography

Eduardo Machuca by Juan Rodrigo Llaguno, 1996My love and passion for photography started when I was around 12 and my father (RIP)gave me a 35mm film camera as a gift and taught me the basics, which I later learned in deep with a correspondence course with the New York Institute of Photography. Since then, a camera has always been in my hand.

Life and my own decisions, however, took me into other directions and I graduated as an engineer in electronics in communications, in 1988, from the Tec of Monterrey Campus Monterrey, earned my MBA degree in 1996 from Duxx, and worked for 10 years in the telecommunications and information technology industries until in 1998, myself and a partner founded EXPERTiS, a small company devoted to providing embedded design systems services for product development.

Since around year 2002, my dormant feeling towards photography started to grow stronger. So, I bought a decent film camera and started creating images. I also wanted to learn and practice lab film development and printing, so I entered to study a course on professional photography at Colegio Americano de FotografĂa Ansel Adams in Monterrey, of which I graduated in 2003.

In short time, I had my pictures published in El Norte newspaper, others selected for a book about Monterrey City, and others exhibited at galleries. Later, I started taking pictures of my friends and then, other people started asking me to take pictures of them.

I am now fully devoted to photography and moved from Monterrey to Merida on June, 2005. I live with my 14-years old son and my mother who helps me a lot with him :-). I have two younger brothers.

Although I like and have played as amateur most sports, such as soccer, baseball, basketball, volleyball, etc., I particularly like squash and taekwondo. As a matter of fact, I was about to present my exam towards earning my black belt in taekwondo, when I moved to Merida. Things to do.

By the way, I speak Spanish, my native tongue, and English; and of course, I also write and read in both. I was born in Tuxpam, Veracruz, Mexico on October 12; my second brother was also born there, and the younger one was born in Veracruz City. However, we were all practically raised in Coatzacoalcos until we moved to Monterrey to study the university.

And, other things I like are writing, reading, listening to music, watching movies. I used to play chess but haven't done so in years. Also, I used to paint acquarelles but again, haven't done it in ages. However, I now paint with light...

Eduardo Machuca's Philosophy

Photography Style and Attitude

Self-portrait Eduardo MachucaMy philosophy refers to my style and attitude towards wedding photography. There are four or five generally accepted styles for wedding photography. These are: Traditional, Photojournalistic, Creative, Illustrative and Fine-Art.

In brief, Traditional refers to formal portraits, posed, of the bride and groom, family and friends, and candid photographs during the wedding.

Photojournalistic is a bit contrary to traditional in the sense that there are no posed photographs; the photographer acts like a graphic reporter and images are taken without giving posing instructions nor the couple and party being aware of the photographer.

The Creative style refers to when the photographer takes advantage of beautiful surroundings and lighting situations and angles and places the subject within and then, let them free to be themselves. Thus, capturing more spontaneous moments. This style uses the photographer's artistic judgment and allows him/her to create images, rather than capturing moments such as in the other two styles above. The Creative style is sometimes called, faux-photojournalism.

Then there is the Illustrative style, in which the photographer arranges every single detail in the picture; it is like a commercial shooting setup for a magazine cover or billboard.

Finally, there is the Fine-Art style in which the photographer blends wedding images with surrealistic ones, for instance, or makes use of Polaroid-transfer and other techniques, either traditional or digital. Hope this was brief enough.

Now, I am more inclined toward the photojournalistic and creative styles for wedding photography, but I feel at ease at any other style you may request.

According to Murphy's Laws, an expert is one who knows more and more about less and less, until he knows absolutely everything about nothing. So, besides wedding photography, I continuously pursue other photography interests and techniques and experiences, which in turn, I can bring back to your advantage while photographing your wedding day.

As for my personality, I have a candid one. I am easygoing but professional. Just as creativity is 1% inspiration and 99% transpiration, I believe success in photographing your wedding day is 1% aptitude and 99% attitude.

And remember, professional photographers give predictable results. Don't risk your wedding day memories. Reserve today!
